About Ron Behrens

Ron Behrens qualified in Medicine at the University of Zambia where he practised as a hospital physician for 2 years. On emigrating to the United Kingdom, he undertook his postgraduate medical training in the West Midlands and Cambridge,  specialising in gastroenterology.


In 1983 Ron was awarded an MRC travelling fellowship to work in the Gambia on malnutrition and diarrhoeal diseases in children. On his return to Cambridge he continued his research at the MRC Dunn Nutrition Unit and Addenbrookes Hospital exploring gutintestinal permeability; developing a clinical test for its measurement.


He completed his Doctorate of Medicine on the subject.


Ron was appointed to the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Hospital for Tropical Diseases. Here, his research was focussed on nutritional supplementation in paediatric diarrhoeal diseases.


In 1989 Ron was appointed the first consultant in the UK in Travel and Tropical Medicine at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases and has since led research and training in Travel Medicine both in the UK and internationally.


Ron was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1992 and   has an academic appointment at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He currently serves on national and international professional advisory and policy panels, advises the pharmaceutical industry and contributes to numerous editorial boards as a referee.


Ron has provided consultancy services to industry for over 20 years and has worked with multinational companies including Techint E&C, Hardy Oil&Gas,  Exxon Mobil, Mobil,  Chevron,  Shell,  Stat Oil Hydro,  BHP Billiton and British Airways as a consultant and advisor. He has provided and developed policy and changed practice in occupational and clinical services helping to implement best practice.


He is a consultant medical advisor to Shoreland Inc., a medical publishing company providing healthcare professionals, data and recommendations related to international health risks and travelling. 


Ron has published over 100 peer reviewed research papers, books and book chapters on a wide range of subjects, the most recent of which can be found here. He has given invited lectures to many international conferences, recently to the International Committee of Military Medicine and the 4th North European Conference on Travel Medicine.
